I have been working on some new ideas for my students to do during their Daily Five "Word Work" rotation. A couple days ago I posted about my Word of the Week Graphic Organizer. Another idea I had was inspired by a couple different sources. I first saw the idea for a Boggle bulletin board on Pinterest. Click here to see the pic. Then I saw a post on Clutter-Free Classroom that further inspired me. Here is a picture of the Boggle Bulletin Board that I put up today: {I'll have more pics from ... [Read More]
Word of the Week Freebie
For the upcoming school year I would like to revamp our Daily 5 "Word Work" options. Last year during that rotation our students completed worksheets on previously taught grammar, spelling, and vocabulary skills. I want to take less of a "drill and kill" approach for this year. I am working on a few different ideas. The first is to have a Word of the Week. Each week I will pick a new word {possibly related to academic vocabulary or a content area}. One option my students will have during their ... [Read More]

A New Pinterest-Inspired Project, a Freebie, and a Reminder
I found another amazing idea for my classroom on Pinterest. Apparently, I am unable to come up with my own original ideas. No biggie though...I love finding wonderful ideas from other teachers, and making them my own. Although I found this idea on Pinterest, it can be traced back to an old post from Growing Kinders. What I discovered is a Story Map Poster using Post-Its!!! Here's how my own turned out: {Click the pic to download the doc used to make this poster} I also decided that it ... [Read More]
Look what I made…
I am a teacher who loves designing creative and fun bulletin boards to display student work. For my first several years of teaching I was in a portable. Believe it or not, I loved it! The whole classroom was one giant bulletin board, wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, and ready to decorate! In my new classroom I have been faced with some major challenges:The walls are made of a type of brick that staples and pushpins will not go through, and which nothing sticks to. To make matters worse, one ... [Read More]
Target $ Spot Find = Word Choice Resource
One day during this last school year while I was circulating throughout my classroom, I came across one of my students who was working on writing. I noticed that besides her pencil, she also had a handful of colored pens lined up next to her Writer’s Notebook. I watched over her shoulder as she wrote. Every time she added a descriptive word to her writing, she would write that word using one of the colored pens. Then she would continue with pencil. Her descriptive adjectives and verbs were ... Creating a Class Thesaurus
A few years ago when I was teaching 6th grade, I had my students create a Class Thesaurus. It turned out to be an amazing activity. While going through my old 6th grade files, I came across the Thesaurus we created and realized that this same idea would work with my 4th graders. I can't wait to do this activity next year! Here's how it works: 1. I typed up, printed, and cut cards for 30 common verbs and adjectives. 2. I put all of the verbs in one paper bag and all the adjectives in ... [Read More]
